In the 162 years since Carroll was incorporated as Wisconsin’s first four-year institution of higher education, much has changed. The college has certainly grown – enrollment in fall 2007 was 3,325, including graduate and part-time students. Academic offerings have expanded and Carroll now offers more than 60 areas of study, four undergraduate degrees and four graduate degrees, including a clinical doctorate in physical therapy.
Carroll is about to make another change. Effective July 1, 2008, the institution will be named Carroll University, according to a decision by the Board of Trustees.
But while the name will change, many things central to the Carroll experience will not. We remain committed to the core undergraduate program and to the significance of a strong liberal arts-based curriculum for all students. We will continue to provide small classes, personal attention, excellent faculty and staff, and opportunities for students to become involved in intercollegiate athletics and a wide variety of campus organizations. Minimal increases in tuition, and financial aid supported by loyal and committed alumni, friends and others will continue to help keep a Carroll education affordable.
The name Carroll University reflects what Carroll has become; national organizations already include Carroll in their “university” categories. And while much of what you have grown to love about Carroll won’t change, the “university” name will help us:
-
Create partnerships with international institutions and recruit international students. The word “university” has consistent meaning worldwide, while in some cultures, “college” means high school or trade school.
-
Retain our status with many peer institutions that have already successfully changed their names.
-
Recruit non-traditional, graduate and distance-learning students. Programs for these students will help support the traditional Carroll Experience for undergraduates.
