Amphipods are small, aquatic crustaceans.  They are probably the most common macroinvertebrate in Genesee Creek and form an important foundation for the food web in the stream.  Over the past several years, Dr. Susan Lewis and Carroll students have collaborated on a variety of projects investigating the ecology and behavior of amphipods at the Greene Field Station.  Amphipods care for their young by carrying their eggs in brood pouches until they hatch.  Much of our research has focused on the environmental correlates of this parental care behavior, asking whether care is influenced by factors such as predation risk or water quality.Other projects have investigated mating behavior, habitat selection, and the behavioral effects of parasitism.
