Grant Information
Goal: To provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to engage in scholarly activities one-on-one with a faculty member during summer 2009. Students will receive a stipend of $3,000 plus an opportunity to receive funds for research supplies and/or toward travel to a meeting to present the project results. Faculty will receive a stipend of $1,500. Note that each faculty member can submit proposals with no more than two different students.
Application Process:
- Each student who is interested must identify a faculty member with whom to work.
- The student/faculty team should develop a project of interest to both.
- It is permissible for two students to submit one proposal as a team. The proposal should explain how such a group project is consistent with disciplinary norms as well as how each student's contribution is unique and is equivalent to one Pioneer Scholar project. If accepted, each student will receive a $3000 stipend. The faculty member will receive one stipend. Each student should complete an application.
- All application materials are to be submitted electronically to Jodi Weaver at jweaver@carrollu.edu by Friday, Feb. 20, 2009 at 4 p.m. The student should complete the student scholar application form and the faculty member should complete the faculty mentor application form. Each person should submit their application electronically by clicking the "Submit by email" button at the bottom of the application form. If you have any questions about the application, please contact Jodi Weaver at jweaver@carrollu.edu.
- We will be holding a Pioneer Scholar Grant writing (application form) workshop on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Shattuck 203. You may drop in when you can to get your questions answered about how to write your grant proposal application.
- The proposals will be evaluated, and notification to the student and faculty member will be made by Thursday, March 5, 2009.
Expectations:
- Each student who is awarded a Pioneer Scholar stipend will participate in scholarly activities instead of employment during the summer.
- The majority of the scholarly activities must be completed during summer 2009.
- All student/faculty teams will be required to participate in group meetings in May 2009 and September 2009 (dates to be announced), at which plans and results of the scholarly activities will be shared and student learning assessed. In addition, group meetings between smaller numbers of teams will occur monthly between May and September.
- All student/faculty teams who receive funding are required to prepare a poster or oral presentation at Celebrate Carroll Day in spring 2010.
- The faculty member and student are expected to meet regularly over the summer to assess progress and modify the project as necessary.
- Students must keep a log documenting weekly activities, approximate research hours and descriptions of interactions with their faculty mentor.
